Ferrari Supercar

John Lennon’s first car a Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Coupe will go under the hammer on February 5th, it is thought that the car will sell somewhere around the £140,000 mark. The light-blue 1965 Ferrari 330 GT was immaculately restored in the mid 90s.

John Lennon’s biographer Philip Norman described how car dealers descended on the Fab Four singer’s home following news that he passed his test and offered him a ‘gleaming smorgasbord’ of luxury cars. He was offered Maseratis, Aston Martins and Jaguars but Lennon’s choice was the Ferrari. He paid £2000 for the car back in 1965.

Previously John Lennon’s psychedelic Rolls Royce sold for £1.5 million in 1985.

Porsche unveiling the latest version of its 918 hybrid supercar at the opening day of the North American Auto Show in Detroit today.

The  new Porsche 918 RSR is based on concept cars 911 GT3 R and 918 Spyder.

In total the RSR has 756bhp; 555bhp comes from its mid-mounted V8 petrol engine (taken from Porsche’s RS Spyder LMP2 car) driven through a six-speed paddle-shift transmission to the rear wheels, and a further 201bhp is generated by two electric motors on the front wheels. A torque vectoring function incorporated within the electric motors provide variable torque distribution to the front axle, said to increase agility and improve steering feel.

Porsche has given the green light for 918 production but not confirmed when we can expect to see the final car. Despite this the company is already reported to have taken deposits for the range topping supercar!

If you can’t wait that long – why not join the 100 Supercar Club to drive the Porsche 911 (997) Turbo Convertible Tiptronic ‘S’, the Porsche 911 (997) Carrera 4S Coupe (GT3 aerokit) and the Porsche RS60 Spyder Tiptronic ‘S’ NOW.

Porsche Supercar Premiere

In just a few hours we’ll know exactly what Porsche has been concocting back at Weissach to become its first new model of 2011. In a sense we already know that it will be a fully-manufactured product based on the gorgeous 918 Spyder Concept – the mid-engine hybrid concept sports car first revealed by Porsche at Geneva last March.

Last month Porsche announced it would be revealing a new sports car at Detroit’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), and word was that it would be based on the 918 Spyder Concept – probably a GT racer fitted with a more mainstream (i.e. non-hybrid) powerplant.

During the night Porsche released the following video which shows a fixed-roof version of the 918 Spyder Concept design, and with images of the iconic Porsche 917 race car showing in the background Porsche are clearly inviting us to make a direct connection between the two.

You can watch the live Webcast of the Porsche press conference in Detroit at www.porsche.com/detroit on January 10, 2011.

Porsche has announced it will unveil an all-new model in a world premiere at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show this month, after hinting for some time that its return to the Detroit show would include an impressive debut.

The supercar could be a version of the 918 Spyder concept that made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show and was recently green-lighted for production a few months later. The German magazine Auto Zeitung reported last month that the car could be the 929, a “no-compromise two-seat supercar” based on the 918 that would slot in above the 911. German TV veiwers had at least one reason to be cheerful recently when they were treated to three of the fatherlands finest supercars -  the Audi R8 GT, Porsche 911 997 GT2 RS and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG taking each other on piston-to-piston.

German TV programma GRIP released this video of a comparison between the Audi R8 GT, Porsche 911 GT2 and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG which has now thankfully landed up in our greasy driving-glove covered mitts via YouTube.

100 Supercar Club welcomes the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The 100 Supercar Club is proud to be bringing you the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. And just in case you were wondering why we were getting soooo excited about it – here’s the skinny to get you a little hot under the collar too…

This astonishing £157,000 coupe is a remarkable piece of engineering. The gull-wing doors, as previously seen on the 1955 300SL, make this stunning design an instantly recognisable icon.

To enter the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG’s cabin you first press a button on the stylish key fob. This causes a small handle to emerge from the door. Give this a quick tug and the gull-wing elegantly lifts skywards to reveal the majestic interior. Once inside it can be a bit of a stretch to re-close the door, but hey, all of a sudden traditional doors feel rather tame.

Now, after a few hours playing with the gull-wings you may actually fancy a drive. Fire-up the 6.2-litre V8 engine (badged 6.3). This monstrous beast produces 571hp and propels its door loving owner to 62mph in only 3.8 seconds, and on to a mighty 197mph. This teeth shattering performance inevitably uses a fair chunk of fuel, so expect to average roughly 21mpg. Eco warriors best look elsewhere then.

The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has excellent handling. It feels supremely composed at high speed and the pin sharp steering, and massive brakes, inspire tremendous confidence. Being a hard-core coupé the ride can be a little harsh, but this is a small price to pay for driving one of the most iconic vehicles of its generation.

Standard specification includes the extremely funky gull-wings (did we mention those?), plus duel-clutch transmission with paddle shifts, heated memory sports seats, cruise control, and rain sensing wipers. Options include ceramic brakes and a carbon fibre bonnet and mirror casings. So, go on – visit our 100 Supercar Club Fleet and make the first step to driving this baby today…

Porsche 911 GT2 RS

As the UK tries to digest more news of government spending cuts, we heard news from Porsche that it has sold all 500 models of its $329,000 911 GT2 RS in a little less than two months. The 911 GT2 RS is the most powerful and ultimately the most expensive in the Porsche lineup.

This comes in the same week that the publisher behind the popular mobile application “Angry Birds”—Chillingo—was acquired by Electronic Arts for $20 million in cash! Even technology giant Apple posted record revenue of $20.34 billion in its financial report.

If you’ve had enough of Angry Birds and your iPad, perhaps we can tempt you with a trip out in our 100 Supercar Club fleet, including the Porsche 911 (997) Turbo Convertible Tiptronic ‘S’, the Porsche 911 (997) Carrera 4S Coupe (GT3 aerokit) and the Porsche RS60 Spyder Tiptronic ‘S’ NOW.

It’s a light weight version of the Audi R8 coupe (weighing just 3,362 pounds) and boasts of 560 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque, reaching from 0-62 mph in just 3.6 seconds with a top speed of 199 mph. The Audi R8 GT will be restricted to only 333 examples – each car being individually numbered and feature a badge with its production number on the shift lever knob and a choice of four body colors: Samoa Orange metallic, Suzuka Gray metallic, Ice Silver metallic and Phantom Black pearl effect.
